Rowing regulations for 2024-25 | Published 31 October 2024

ROW i The BUCS Rowing Championships shall be conducted in accordance with the following BUCS sport specific regulations, the BUCS general regulations, and the British Rowing Rules of Racing. Further event specific requirements, rules, and regulations will be contained within the entry and pre-event information for each Championship.

ROW ii In the event that these regulations contradict the BUCS general regulations, these BUCS sport specific regulations will supersede, unless specifically stated otherwise.

ROW iii In the event that these regulations contradict the British Rowing Rules of Racing, these BUCS sport specific regulations will supersede, unless specifically stated otherwise.

ROW iv Institutions/Playing Entities are advised to also refer to British Rowing’s RowSafe guidance.


ROW 1 Championships BUCS will host annually the following Championships:

ROW 1.1 Indoor Championships The programme shall include the events listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

ROW 1.2 4s and 8s Head The programme shall include the events listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

ROW 1.3 Regatta The programme shall include the events listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

ROW 1.4 Small Boats Head The programme shall include the events listed in Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers.

ROW 2 Definitions These apply to all BUCS Rowing Championships:

ROW 2.1 Beginner Only open to student-athletes who have taken up the sport - on the water (regardless of their discipline) after 1 June of the preceding academic year.

ROW 2.2 Intermediate Open to all student-athletes, except for those who are entered in the Championship category (excluding Championship Lightweight) of the same boat type, at the same Championships.

ROW 2.3 Championship Lightweight Open to all student-athletes, subject to weight restrictions.

ROW 2.4 Championship Open to all student-athletes, except for those who are entered in the Intermediate category of the same boat type, at the same Championships.

ROW 2.5 Lightweight categories of any boat type, unless otherwise specified, shall be a Championship category.

ROW 2.6 The restrictions of ROW 2.2 and ROW 2.4 do not include coxes. For the avoidance of doubt, a cox can cox in both Championship and Intermediate categories of the boat type, at the same Championships. The cox does not need to be the same gender as the rest of the crew, however, a cox must be from the same institution/Playing Entity as the rest of the crew.

ROW 2.7 For the avoidance of doubt, ROW 2 and sub-regulations apply to the entirety of a Championships, not separate racing days. I.e. The Regatta as a Championships includes all three days of racing and the 4s and 8s Head as a Championships include both days of racing.

ROW 2.8 Sanctions for the breach of these regulations will be in accordance with the sanctions within the rules of British Rowing and at the discretion of the Race Committee.

ROW 3 Weights

ROW 3.1 Lightweights Lightweight crews are not averaged at any BUCS Rowing Championships.

ROW 3.2 The lightweight weigh-in will be from two hours before the beginning of the racing day up to one hour prior to the published start time of each category.

ROW 3.3 If racing in more than one lightweight event on a racing day the individual need only weigh in once.

ROW 4 Substitutions

ROW 4.1 100% of a crew, and additionally the cox, may be substituted before the crew’s first race in an event in accordance with the process and deadlines outlined in the relevant Event Guide. These substitutions must be made from either the reserve list or between already competing crews (as long as this does not contravene any other regulations regarding categories or doubling up).

ROW 4.2 An institution must submit their reserve list at the same time as making their entries to a Championships, as detailed in the relevant Entry Information.

ROW 4.3 Any crews not submitting substitutions and found to have changed the crew in any way will be disqualified and their institution/Playing Entity will face a charge of misconduct under REG 5.

ROW 5 BUCS Points BUCS Points shall be awarded as per Appendix 1 (‘BUCS Competition Offer and Associated BUCS Points’), subject to entry numbers, in Championship events and for the final victor ludorum standings. Multiple Championship entries are permitted from one institution/Playing Entity, with medals awarded to the top three crews as applicable, but only the highest placed institution/Playing Entity crew will receive BUCS Points.

ROW 6 Disputes at events In line with REG 7.7, should a dispute occur at an event, the event appeal panel for Rowing shall comprise of the Chair of Race Committee, Members of Race Committee (if applicable) and a BUCS Staff Member.
