We are delighted to induct into our Hall of Fame; St Mary’s University alumni Rebecca Romero MBE, Swansea University alumni Alun Wyn Jones OBE, and Durham University alumni Jonathan Edwards CBE.
Rebecca Romero MBE
It’s hard enough to compete at the very top of one sport professionally let alone two. That’s exactly what Rebecca Romero MBE did, competing in both cycling and rowing.
Rebecca is still the only British woman to compete in two different sports at the Olympic Games, and only the second woman in Olympic history to win medals in two different sports. She finished her career with Olympic gold and silver, as well as three World Championship golds and a silver.
Rebecca now appears on three Hall of Fame’s, adding BUCS to her British Cycling and St Mary’s University accolades.
Alun Wyn Jones OBE
Before Alun Wyn Jones OBE became the household name that is now, he was a student at Swansea University from 2005 to 2009 studying Law. During his time at Swansea University, he represented the Swans in their annual Varsity competition against Cardiff.
Fast forward to present times, and Alun Wyn is the world’s most capped rugby union player, the most capped Welshman, and the most capped Welsh captain. Across his career he competed in four Lions tours, won five Six Nations Championships, three Grand Slams and four Triple Crowns. He also completed a Six Nations Grand Slam at under 21 level in 2005.
Jonathan Edwards CBE
Widely regards as one of the greatest male triple jumpers of all time, the Durham University alum was one of the leading lights in British athletics throughout the 90s and early 2000s.
Before winning gold at the 2000 Olympic Games, Jonathan leaped onto the international stage in Gothenburg, Sweden at the 1995 World Championships. He took gold with a world record jump of 18.29m, a record that still stands today. Jonathan’s 16-year career started in 1987 at the Summer Universiade and ended with 14 major medals; six gold, five silver and three bronze.
Congratulations to our 2023 Hall of Fame inductees, who join the likes of Lauren Steadman MBE and David Florence, who were inducted just 12 months ago, as well as many more incredible sporting stars.
Rebecca, Alun Wyn and Jonathan will be formally inducted at our Awards ceremony on Thursday 13 July.
