A sea of medals was won across five of the six sports, while many cemented their spots in latter rounds of competition.
It was a busy day at badminton with the introduction of the seeded players onto the court as the event hits crunch time in the race for the medals on Sunday.
On the track at EIS, the 3000m, 400m, 200m and Relay heats got underway before the 800m Semi Finals took centre stage. The only medal event of the day saw Loughborough’s Zac Davies throw 15.60 to take the Men’s Shot Put gold for the second year running.
Over at Ponds Forge, the hotly anticipated Karate Championships began. Seven medals were won in total, but it was a Nottingham clean sweep of the Team Kumite and Kata titles that caught the headlines. This included a victory for EUSA silver medallists, Jordana Williams, Jessica Maitland and Amelia Clow in the Open Team Kata.
In the pool, it was another day of record-breaking action. Five BUCS records were broken, including Surrey’s Andras Szeni in the S7 Open 50m Butterfly in a time of 35.82, and Angharad Evans of Stirling who stopped the clock at 01:06.02 to claim gold.
At Canon Medical Arena, another two champions were crowned. In the Women’s Foil, Cambridge’s Anatasiia Tsurkis took top spot on the podium, while Edinburgh’s Quentin Geoffroy won gold in the Mixed/Men’s Sabre.
Climbing made its arrival at this year’s BUCS Nationals in its traditional Saturday spot. As always the crowd were in exceptional voice for our 12 finalists. Leeds took home an unprecented double in the individual events thanks to Sam Butterworth and Isabella Edgington. In the team events it was Sheffield who did their own double with Men's and Women's gold.
The final day of competition sees the conclusion of an incredible weekend of higher education sport set to stick in the memory of students, staff, volunteers, officials and sports fans.
Action from the Athletics: Indoor Championships, Swimming: Long Course Championships, Fencing Finals and the Karate Individual Senior Kumite and Kata Finals will be live on YouTube.
