Robyn Munro (Strathclyde) and Orrin Carson etched their names in history on Tuesday night as they picked up the first ever Winter World University Gold Medal in Mixed Doubles Curling.

A tremendous couple of days of Curling culminated on Tuesday night as GB Students Robyn Munro and Orrin Carson took home GB’s first medal of the games.

The GB athletes opened their tournament with a tight game against the USA winning 6-7 securing the game with a 2-0 win in the final end. The team picked up another win against Switzerland before coming up against eventual fellow finalists, Germany. A tough game ended with a big win for the Germans with the game ending 10-4.

Team GB students won their final four games and secured the top seed going into the semi finals. Munro and Carson were placed against the hosts, Italy who finished in fourth.

Great Britain secured the win against the Italians in seven ends finishing off with 3 points in the seventh to complete the game 6-3 and setting up a final against Germany.

The Munro and Carson fan base were in full force ahead of the game, with the flags flying and bagpipes playing setting up the perfect atmosphere for the final.

A good two first ends saw the team go up 4-0 before Germany pulled the score back to 4-4 after the third. Two points a piece over the next two ends kept the scores level at 6-6 going into the sixth end.

Munro and Carson picked up the pace and put their foot on the gas taking the next end 4-0, Germany took the seventh end 2-0 with the game finishing 10-8.

On winning the first ever Mixed Doubles Gold Robyn Munro said “It’s a huge honour to win the first ever World University Mixed Doubles title and have our names written in history.”

“I’m really proud of the couple of days that we’ve had and I can’t wait to soak up the rest of the event while cheering on the other GB teams.”

Orrin Carson added “I picked up great momentum in Perth and carried that into this week and I couldn’t be happier”

“We’ll definitely enjoy it over the next few days and we’ll soak up the experience of the World University Games.”
