Loughborough University’s Powerbase gym is a true reflection of the Loughborough Sport brand – fitter, stronger, faster – as they continue to lead the way in S&C training.

Recognised as one of the largest strength and conditioning gyms in the UK, Powerbase is a facility designed to maximise athletic potential. The elite level gym provides a home to many Olympic and Paralympic athletes, as well as many of the country’s leading sports teams. This year saw the facility refurbished to create an environment where training, recovery and rehabilitation can all be accessed under one roof by everyone, whether they are stepping into a gym for the first time or are an Olympic gold medallist.

Richard Ellis, Development Lead at Powerbase said, “Powerbase is unapologetically a performance centre. It was put together with strength and conditioning practice in mind, and services our 16 University Performance Programmes, and as many as 10 National Governing Bodies that use the facility”.

Making Strength and Conditioning Accessible to All Students

This year has seen Powerbase step up its educational delivery even further by hosting modules for the new Loughborough University Strength and Conditioning MSc programme. This has been in addition to the collaboration with local college programmes AASE (Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) and DISE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence).

Nathan Bullock, Strength and Conditioning Coach at Powerbase commented, “The vision of the Strength and Conditioning Department at Loughborough University is to create student athletes who are physically and mentally able to deal with the demands of competition and training, while completing their University degree uncompromised.

Our approach is to utilise a top down model; this looks at the demands of the sport and what it takes to win, then a gap analysis arms the athletes with the right tools to be able to compete at the highest possible level.”

Taking Strength and Conditioning to the Next Level

Enabling Powerbase to take its innovative site one step further has been its partnership with premium brand and global front runner Technogym, whose products make up a large portion of the equipment used in the facility.

The most popular equipment in the gym is the Technogym Half Rack and Power Racks, as the majority of Powerbase’s prescriptions are based around Olympic lifts or compound type movements with squat/deadlift variations. To complement this is a full zone of PURE, a range of state-of-the-art kit designed to maximise power and sports performance training, making it ideal for elite level training.

Speaking of Technogym, Richard added: “It was their appetite to venture into the performance market, and the accompanying developmental opportunity that really made the partnership hold unique appeal”.

Leading with Innovation on Every Level

Powerbase’s cardio zone is sat on its own dedicated mezzanine floor overlooking the complete facility, with pieces from Skill Line providing both students and athletes with the ultimate performance training experience. Skillrun specifically offers elite athletes and demanding fitness enthusiasts the ability to combine cardio and power training in a single solution, meaning users can switch from an all-out run to sled-push training seamlessly, keeping workouts challenging and versatile.

“We are incredibly proud of the partnership with Loughborough University, the world’s best sporting university, and our sector-leading brands align perfectly. We have a long heritage of involvement with elite sport having been the official supplier to the last seven editions of the Olympic Games and we are delighted to see some of the UK’s best athletes using our equipment at Powerbase”, said Ben Sandham, Technogym Sales Area Manager.
