Currently completing his Masters studies at UCLan, the table tennis scholar previously represented Nottingham Trent University from 2018-2022.

We caught up with Murhad to hear about the opportunity, his higher education journey and future ambitions:

How did the opportunity come about?

I first discovered the IOC Young Leaders Programme through a friend I met during the FISU World Forum in Croatia, who shared the opportunity on LinkedIn. Their enthusiastic post caught my attention and ignited my curiosity about the programme, as it closely aligns with my deep-seated passion for utilizing sport as a catalyst for social change.

Reflecting on my upbringing in a low-income neighbourhood in East London, I recognize how pivotal sports, particularly table tennis, have been in my life. Growing up, I often faced challenges and limitations that could have hindered my development, but thanks to the unwavering support of Greenhouse Sports, I was able to overcome many of these obstacles. Through their dedicated coaching, mentorship, and access to competitive opportunities, I experienced firsthand the transformative power of sport.

Greenhouse Sports not only provided me with skill development but also instilled valuable life lessons in teamwork, resilience, and leadership. Their commitment to helping young people harness the benefits of sports inspired me to aspire to make a greater impact myself. This personal journey motivated me to apply for the IOC Young Leaders Programme, where I hope to further my influence in using sport as a means of fostering social change and empowering others in my community.

What do you aim to achieve with this opportunity?

My ultimate goal is to give back to the sport that has significantly shaped my life and provided me with countless opportunities. I envision establishing a community-based table tennis club in the heart of Aberdeen, specifically on the high street, which would serve as a vibrant hub for residents. This club will operate on an equity-based membership model, ensuring that young people from diverse backgrounds, particularly those who may not have access to sports facilities or resources, can participate without financial barriers.

I have observed that many young individuals in my community lack the same opportunities I was fortunate to experience. Through this initiative, I aim to create an inclusive environment where anyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, can learn and enjoy the game of table tennis. This club will not only focus on skill development but also foster teamwork, resilience, and a sense of community among participants.

Moreover, I am genuinely excited about the prospect of having access to mentorship from leading professionals in the sports industry as I navigate this journey. Their guidance will be invaluable as I work to refine my vision, overcome challenges, and implement effective strategies to promote engagement in this sport. Together, I hope to make a meaningful impact in Aberdeen by breaking down barriers to participation and inspiring the next generation of table tennis players.

What role has BUCS and higher education sport played?

Higher education sports have played a pivotal role in shaping not only my athletic abilities but also my personal growth and development. My journey began at Nottingham Trent University, where I had the honour of competing in table tennis. In 2019, I represented my university at the prestigious European Universities Sports Association (EUSA) Championships, which took place in the picturesque town of Camerino, Italy. This remarkable experience served as both a rigorous test of my skills and an unforgettable opportunity to connect with a diverse array of athletes from numerous countries. Engaging with fellow competitors from different cultural backgrounds enriched my understanding of the spirit of competitive sports and the dedication it entails.

Now, as a table tennis scholar at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), I have been fortunate to further refine my skills in an environment that fosters growth and excellence. The university's state-of-the-art facilities, coaching staff, and supportive athletic community have all played a significant role in my ongoing development. My athletic journey has taken an exciting turn as well since I discovered my passion for powerlifting. This newfound interest led to a remarkable achievement: I qualified for the Scottish Nationals in my very first meet, an accomplishment that exceeded my expectations and solidified my commitment to the sport.

Looking ahead, I am eagerly anticipating the BUCS Powerlifting Championships scheduled for April. This event presents a fantastic opportunity for me to showcase not only my hard work and dedication but also the progress I have made in both my training and overall athleticism. Competing against the best in the university circuit will be a thrilling challenge that I am ready to embrace.

Additionally, my involvement with BUCS has been instrumental in providing me with various pathways to develop my leadership skills. Representing my university at the FISU World Forum in Croatia was a particularly transformative experience. It offered me invaluable insights into the global landscape of sports development and enriched my understanding of the various challenges and opportunities in the field. This experience broadened my perspective, sparked my passion for contributing to the future of sports, and reinforced my desire to make an impact both within my university community and in the wider sports sector.

As I continue my journey in sports, I remain committed to not only excelling in my athletic pursuits but also to fostering a supportive environment that encourages others to pursue their sporting interests and ambitions. The lessons I have learned through my experiences thus far are shaping me into a well-rounded individual, and I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My long-term goal is to bridge the gap between elite and grassroots sports, ensuring that young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, can access valuable opportunities. I plan to focus on community-led initiatives that provide training, mentorship, and resources for personal and athletic growth.

Additionally, I aim to foster partnerships with local businesses and sports organisations to create sustainable financial support for these programs. Lastly, I will engage in policy advocacy to promote funding and inclusive practices that enhance access to sports for all. Through these efforts, I aspire to empower communities and help every young person thrive through sports.
