Nationals has acted as a stepping stone for many athletes looking to make the next step forward in their professional sporting careers and grace the international stage. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, BUCS athletes secured 88 medals. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, meanwhile, athletes secured an impressive 132 medals.
The 2022 BUCS 100m BUCS and BT Outdoor Athletics champion David Morgan-Harrison, who claimed the Northern 60m Indoor title earlier this year, added to his 60m gold medal collection with a typically dominant performance in front of a packed arena.
The University of Hull athlete said, “It’s a great start and it sets me up well for the outdoor season. I’ve competed at BUCS before and it’s an amazing competition. I couldn’t wait to come back again. BUCS is always a goal of mine and I was hopeful going into the competition this year.”
Across numerous badminton courts, spectators gathered to support their fellow students. Victoria Liang and Tash Lado, a doubles pairing from University of Nottingham, hoping to maintain the universities impressive winning streak this year.
Victoria Liang spoke about the weekend ahead, “It’s my final year at Nottingham and I know this will be a really good experience. I came to BUCS last year and it didn’t go as well as I’d liked. Hopefully this year I can do better. I'm really looking forward to supporting the team and watching everyone else play.”
Tash Lado is similarly excited to be part of Nationals this year, “I’m looking forward to spending the weekend with the team and representing Nottingham. We hardly ever actually go to tournaments together so it's nice to actually be with everyone and have Vicky playing here too.”
