BUCS is thrilled to announce one of the largest ever GB student delegations sent to a FISU Winter World University Games with BT Group announced as the first official international headline partner.

The FISU Winter World University Games 2023, set to take place in Lake Placid, USA, will see one of the largest GB delegations yet.

Spanning between 12-22 January, the 2023 Games will feature 86 events across 12 sports in Lake Placid and other surrounding areas in New York State, including Ice Hockey, Curling, Biathlon, Freeski, Ski Cross, Snowboard, Figure Skating, Short Track Skating and Speed Skating.

Making up 37 of the 63 athletes going to Lake Placid, are the men’s and women’s ice hockey competitors, from universities spanning the length of the UK, from Portsmouth and Bath Spa to Edinburgh and Glasgow Caledonian.

Following the achievement of a bronze medal in curling at the last games in 2019, this year’s ten GB Students competitors will be keen to replicate this success in January and bring this title back home. The final 16 competitors will showcase their talents across seven other sports.

International Performance Manager, Marc Forrest said “We are immensely proud to announce the talented athletes that have been selected by BUCS in association with sport specific NGB to represent GB Students on behalf of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the FISU Winter World University Games 2023. The FISU Winter World University Games is widely recognised as the largest international winter multi-sport event after the Winter Olympic Games providing students with an exceptional experience and an opportunity to showcase their talent on a world stage.”

Additionally, it has been announced that BT Group will be the first official international headline partner for BUCS’ delegation at the 2023 Winter World University Games. Commenting on this milestone, Head of Early Careers at BT Group Paul Sobers said: “BT Group is proud to be involved in the Winter World University Games; we recognise the importance of university sport in the cultivation of the next generation of world-class athletes, and these games provide a platform for these talented individuals to celebrate their abilities and progress to the next level as professional athletes. Most importantly, we believe in the power of sport and the multiscale benefits it can bring to the lives of young people.”
