The Championship, organised by the European University Sports Association (EUSA), took place on the scenic Lake Jarun, renowned for its ideal rowing conditions. The event showcased not only the athletic prowess of the participants but also the vibrant student experience, with camaraderie and cultural exchange at its heart.
This year’s Championship saw a strong representation from the United Kingdom, with 18 student athletes competing from four British universities; University of Oxford, University of Birmingham, University of Surrey, and Imperial College London. The British delegation delivered an exceptional performance, with all four universities medalling earning a total of six medals, underlining the strength and depth of UK university rowing.
Beyond the races, the event highlighted not only the high level of competition but also the enriching student experience that comes with such international sporting events with student athletes and supporters from various countries engaging in cultural exchanges with the city of Zagreb providing the perfect backdrop for this international gathering.
Matt Keogh, Performance Sport Officer at the University of Surrey reflected on their success at the event: "Securing the silver medal at the EUSA Games is a testament to the dedication and talent of Sacha and Leonie Kennedy in the LW2x category. Leonie and Sacha have competed for Team Surrey with distinction over the last 4 years and have gone above and beyond for the boat club. Team Surrey is really proud of their achievement, which reflects not only their hard work but also the relentless commitment of Head of Rowing Tobias Rudkin. His tireless efforts have been instrumental in guiding them to this success, showcasing the strength and unity of our rowing program."
