Description

As Tennis Coordinator you will support and grow the tennis provision at the University of Birmingham, ensuring an appropriate pathway for all levels in collaboration with a range of teams and across a number of offers.

As part of the Sport Development team you will work with the student tennis club to provide coaching and support for our BUCS teams and also support their broader competitive pathway, including coordination of internal ladder leagues. You will also support the development of student coaches by signposting them to relevant opportunities and coordinating internal development opportunities and sharing of bet practice.

Working alongside the Participation team you will work to grow the recreational offer available to students, including the development and delivery of a tennis offer as part of the Active Residents programme in partnership with our Accommodation team.

Main Duties:

- Club support and coaching

- Work in collaboration with the Club Development Team to support the student Tennis club’s development and sustainability

- Support the management and delivery of trials and squad selections for BUCS teams

- Provide coaching to BUCS teams (men’s and women’s)

- Attending representative fixtures, as agreed, to coach and advise individuals and squads, displaying tactical and technical awareness to gain the best possible performance

- Developing annual plans of competition and events including ladder leagues and end of term tournaments

Programme delivery:

-  To develop and deliver an engagement programme for residents of student accommodation to support their wellbeing and belonging

- Work with the Participation team to delivery recreational sport offers outside of the student tennis club, which could include Coach & Play sessions, Social Sport drop-in sessions and ladder leagues

- Create a summer programme to cater for seasonal interest in tennis

- Assisting the UBS team in hosting events such as Open Days and Alumni Sports Days.

Coach development:

- Assisting in the provision of opportunities for coaches to progress and encouraging prospective coaches to become qualified

- Coordination of a coach buddy system to foster a positive network of support for our tennis coaches

- Assist in the appointment of coaches in conjunction with the Club Development Manager and Club Committee, where relevant

Other duties:

- You will actively participate in job chats and personal development reviews on your own performance, and agree objectives and targets and work to achieve these within agreed timescales

- You will attend LTA partnership meetings (usually termly) as well as attend annual LTA training (in September)

- Collate data and information to support reporting to the LTA as part of the partner funding requirements

- Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required and which can be accommodated within the postholder's grading

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications: 

-  Experience UKCC Level 3 coaching award (or equivalent)

- LTA Accredited plus (see https://www.lta.org.uk/roles-and-venues/coaches/accreditation/)

- First aid qualification

- An in-depth understanding of coaching styles and practical delivery

- Knowledge of the sport's organisation at national & regional levels in the UK

- Knowledge/understanding of equity and diversity related to sporting provision

- Motivational and mentoring skills (especially in the context of performance players)

- Ability and track record of working as part of a busy team and working effectively under pressure to deadlines

- A commitment to the development of tennis at all levels and understanding of the sports development process

- Effective problem solving and decision-making skills

- Ability to establish and maintain an environment of winning and success

- IT skills including competence in the use Microsoft Word and Excel

- Experience of successfully leading others, preferably in direct supervision of paid employees and of volunteers

- Understands the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace, including the ability to identify and respond to equality and diversity issues in line with relevant policies and procedures
