Description

The Students’ Union Performance Sport programme at Queen Mary University of London has two subsections, the “Talented athlete programme” and the “Focus team programme”. The aim is to offer an environment that allows student athletes to perform at the highest sporting level possible, whilst obtaining a world-class degree from the University.

The strength & conditioning intern will be expected to deliver S&C sessions to both our talented athletes and focus team strands. Students should not apply if they have doubts over their capacity to take on the internship in addition to their academic commitments.

Once trained and inducted into our sports development team, Interns are expected to take the position of lead coach, and will be responsible for planning, delivering, and reviewing Strength and Conditioning sessions for allocated student athletes throughout the entire academic year (term time only).

This will include creation and delivery of individual and group programmes as well as selection and implementation of appropriate monitoring strategies to assess key aspects of performance.

As part of this role, you will also be expected to help mentor, observe and provide feedback to student volunteers who also wish to gain experience within strength & conditioning (if applicable). Interns are expected to commit to a total of up to 6 hours per week including occasional early morning, evening or weekend work. The intern will have access to experienced S&C mentors who can advise on session planning/deliverance if necessary.

This role will facilitate the opportunity to coach athletes competing at both international and national level. Athletes in the past have competed in: Fencing (Epee), Karate, Road Cycling and Weightlifting.

There will also be an opportunity to develop team-based coaching skills, delivering S&C to our focus teams. In previous years, this has included sports such as Netball and Water Polo. Applicants who feel they meet the criteria stated above should email a CV and Cover Letter to Harry Pape on [email protected] and Terry Bradbrook on [email protected]
