“Stage 2” will be opened on Friday 17 March 2023 for the addition of reserves ONLY and will remain open until 11:59pm on Sunday 26 March 2023.  Note that this deadline is different to the usual Thursday closing of BUCS Play events to enable institutions to add reserve players (and then use them to replace withdrawn entries) for the duration of the team element of the Championships.

ENTRY FEE

£37.50

Please Note: there is NO ACCOMMODATION PACKAGE for this event; competitors are required to source their own accommodation, should they require it. It is strongly advised that competitors ensure any accommodation they book has a free-cancellation option extending up to at least 20 March 2023 to cover the eventuality that their entries are not accepted.

Competitions & BUCS Points Available

The entry fee includes an individual competition and a team competition.

Individual Championship
 ● Single elimination throughout
 ● All matches are a race to 2 frames, except the final which is a race to 3 frames
 ● Coin toss for choice of first break, then alternate breaks right through to the end of the match
 ● There are BUCS medals, BUCS points (see Appendix 1 here) and prizemoney for this competition
 ● Competitors who are part of their institution’s first team or who are entering the event without a team will, without exception, play in this competition

Individual Trophy
 ● Double elimination throughout
 ● All matches are 1 frame
 ● Coin toss for choice of first break, then alternate breaks right through to the end of the match
 ● There are BUCS medals for this competition, but no BUCS points or prizemoney
 ● Competitors who are part of a team which is not their institution’s first team will, by default, play in this competition. Such players may opt to compete in the Individual Championship instead of the Individual Trophy, but this can only be done by indicating this on the Team Details form supplied to UPC by the institution’s main contact
 ● The Individual Trophy will only take place if the size of its field is at least sixteen competitors AND constitutes at least 20% of the overall entry into the event.  If the Individual Trophy does not take place then all competitors will play in the Individual Championship

Team Championship & Team Trophy
 ● One single “round-robin” group stage for both competitions
 ● Subject to having won or drawn at least one match the top two first teams from each group progress to the Team Championship single-elimination playoffs, then the highest remaining team (of any denomination) from each group progresses to the Team Trophy single-elimination playoffs
 ● All matches are the best of ten frames.  Each frame consists of one player from one team playing against one player from the other team. The two players playing the first frame toss a coin for which team breaks first then alternate breaks right through to the end of the match. The winner of a match is the team that wins the most frames. In the case of a group-stage match finishing five-all the result stands as a draw; in the case of a playoff match finishing five-all a best-of-three respotted-blacks competition will decide the winner of the match.
 ● There are BUCS medals, BUCS points (see Appendix 1 here) and prizemoney for both of these competitions.

Entry Allowance

Teams are to be made up of either five or six competitors, with five to play in any given match.

An institution unable to raise the minimum of five competitors needed for one team may enter a maximum of two competitors into the event to play in the Individual Championship only, however an institution with exactly seven, eight or nine competitors may not enter one team of six and one, two or three unattached individuals (or one team of five and two, three or four unattached individuals); such an institution must either limit their entry to six competitors (all in one team) or find extra competitors (to make two teams).  Similarly an institution with exactly thirteen or fourteen competitors must limit their entry to twelve or find extra competitors, and an institution with exactly nineteen competitors must limit their entry to eighteen or find extra competitors.

The number of teams that can be accepted is limited to 40 and preference will be given to first teams, then second teams, etc then to institutions highest in the event rankings.  For example, if 48 entries are received comprised of 25 first teams, 13 second teams, 8 third teams and 2 fourth teams then all of the first teams, all of the second teams and the two highest-ranked institutions’ third teams would be accepted (with the third-highest ranked institution’s third team being first reserve, the fourth-highest ranked institution’s third team being second reserve, etc).

If your institution enters multiple teams then, other than in exceptional circumstances, competitors ascribed to a particular team on the Team Details form will unable to play for any lower-ranked team in the tournament.  As such, please make your team selections carefully.  In case of a change/substitution, competitors may be shuffled up from lower- to higher-ranked teams (e.g. seconds to firsts) or from the reserve list into teams, but no player (including a reserve) can leapfrog a competitor named above him on the Team Details form supplied to UPC by the institution’s main contact.

Entry Process

To apply for the event all eligible competitors must follow these steps:
       1.  Competitors to apply to the event on BUCS Play (Instructions on how to do this can be found here);
       2.  Institution administrator approves entry (Instructions on how to do this can be found here); and
       3.  BUCS approves/denies entry into the event and publishes confirmed entry list.

Each institution must also appoint one of its attendees to be the institution’s “main contact” for the event.  The main contact will be required to email a Team Details form to UPC detailing which of his institution’s competitors are ascribed to which of its teams, who the team captains are, whether any competitors require reasonable adjustment, etc and will serve as the main point of contact between UPC and their institution’s delegation at the event in case of any matters that are not applicable to the team captain(s).

Any data will be handled in accordance with BUCS Privacy Policy.

By participating in this event you agree to adhere to BUCS General Event Disclaimer.
