Maddi Cannell’s career journey is a testament to the power of student leadership and professional development opportunities provided by Universities and BUCS. Starting as a Sabbatical Officer (SABB) at the University of York after completing her law degree, Maddie quickly honed her operational and leadership skills during an unprecedented time for the sector.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Maddi rose to the challenge, taking on additional responsibilities as colleagues were furloughed. She led the reorganisation of sport and wellbeing activities at York, playing a pivotal role in the safe return to play. These experiences not only deepened her operational expertise but also showcased her ability to lead in a crisis.
Recognising her potential, Maddi became a Student Director for BUCS via elections at the annual conference. Over her two-year tenure on the board, she brought invaluable insights from the student perspective, contributing to strategic decisions that shaped the future of university sport. Her time as a trustee enhanced her leadership skills and provided her with a comprehensive understanding of governance and organisational strategy.
Reflecting on her journey, Maddi said, "Being part of BUCS has been an incredible journey of growth and opportunity. From serving as a Student Director to now managing events that inspire and engage so many people, I’ve been supported every step of the way. The skills I developed as a student-leader gave me a strong foundation, and I’m grateful to continue contributing to an organisation that aligns so closely with my passion for sport and wellbeing."
This blend of experiences as a participant, student-leader, and director created the perfect platform for Maddi’s professional growth. Joining BUCS as an Event Coordinator, Maddi quickly made an impact, and her dedication and expertise were recognised with a promotion to Event Manager this year, an example of how BUCS nurtures talent and creates pathways for meaningful careers in sport and beyond..
